El Turco provides Russian translation and localization services for enterprises, language service providers and AI teams. Native Russian linguists translate and review every job, and projects are managed from our production office in Istanbul under ISO 17100 for translation and ISO 18587 for machine translation post-editing. Our headquarters are in London.
Russian localization is a grammar problem as much as a vocabulary problem. Russian nouns change form across six cases, past-tense verbs agree with the gender of the subject and numbers select one of three plural forms, so a string that works in English can break as soon as a variable is inserted. Our teams work in RWS Trados, memoQ, Phrase and XTM and check every delivery with What's Wrong?, our own QA tool.
Dialects and variants
Which Russian do we translate into?
Standard Russian is the written norm for business, media and software wherever Russian is used. Grammar and spelling are uniform across countries, so one well-written Russian target can serve several markets. What changes from country to country is the locale layer: currency, legal entity names, addresses, phone formats, regulatory wording and some everyday vocabulary.
Standard Russian (ru-RU)
The default target for software, e-commerce, marketing, legal and technical content, following the current academic spelling and punctuation rules.
Russian for Kazakhstan, Central Asia and the Caucasus
Same written standard, with local currency, legal references and terminology. Kazakhstan often needs Russian alongside Kazakh, so both targets are planned together.
Russian for the Baltic states, Israel and other communities
Content for Russian-speaking customers outside the region keeps standard Russian but adapts prices, addresses, support hours and cultural references to the local market.
Ukrainian and Belarusian
Ukrainian and Belarusian are separate languages, not Russian variants. El Turco translates Ukrainian as its own target, and a Russian file is never a deliverable for Ukrainian users.
Script and layout
Writing system and layout notes
Russian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, written left to right. Most fonts render Russian correctly, but the letter ё is a recurring decision: Russian publishers often replace it with е, while dictionaries, names and some brands keep it. We fix the rule in the style guide so search, sorting and product names stay consistent.
- Mixed scripts: Latin a, c, e, o, p and x look identical to Cyrillic letters. A Latin letter hidden inside a Russian word breaks search, spell checking and sorting, so our QA scans every delivery for mixed-script words.
- Transliteration: URLs, slugs, SKUs and Latin spellings of Russian names need one agreed scheme, such as GOST 7.79 or a simplified house standard.
- Numbers, prices and dates: comma as decimal separator, non-breaking space for thousands, currency sign after the amount (1 250,50 ₽), dates as 04.11.2026 or 4 ноября 2026 г. and a 24-hour clock.
- Punctuation and capitalization: Russian uses «ёлочки» quotation marks, with „лапки“ for quotes inside quotes. Months and weekdays are lowercase and headings use sentence case rather than English title case.
- Text expansion: Russian words are long and rarely abbreviate well, so Russian UI text usually runs longer than English. Buttons, tabs and table headers need flexible width or approved short forms.
Localization pitfalls
What makes Russian localization different?
Concrete issues our Russian linguists and engineers check for on every project.
Three plural forms
Russian says 1 файл, 2 файла and 5 файлов. The number 21 takes the same form as 1. Code that offers only singular and plural produces visible errors. Strings need the ICU categories one, few and many, plus other for fractions.
Cases and placeholders
A name or product inserted into "Message from {name}" must take the genitive case, which a variable cannot do. We restructure such strings, for example "Отправитель: {name}", so the placeholder stays in its base form.
Gender in past-tense verbs
Past-tense verbs and adjectives agree with the gender of the subject, so "{user} joined the team" needs a masculine or feminine verb. Products either pass a gender variable or use neutral wording agreed with the linguist.
Formality: вы versus ты
Business software, banking and public-facing services use formal вы. Games and youth-oriented apps often use informal ты. Capitalized Вы, a courtesy form in letters to one addressee, looks out of place in most UI, so the style guide records both choices.
Buttons and commands
Russian UI usually labels buttons with an infinitive (Сохранить, Отменить) and uses imperatives in instructions. Mixing the two across one product reads as careless, so the convention is fixed in the glossary before translation starts.
Anglicisms and brand terms
Tech and gaming audiences accept many English terms in Cyrillic or Latin form, while enterprise and regulated content prefers established Russian terminology. Brand and feature names are listed as translate, transliterate or keep in Latin.
Legal and regulatory wording
Consumer terms, privacy notices and labeling follow the rules of each target country, including national personal data laws. Contracts and regulated content go to a legal-domain linguist with a second reviewer, and the target country is confirmed at scoping.

AI training data
Russian AI training data
Russian models struggle with case agreement, verb aspect, free word order and past-tense gender. User text adds informal transliteration in Latin letters, strong profanity and code-switching with English, Ukrainian or Kazakh. El Turco builds Russian datasets for these gaps: speech collection across regions, accents and recording conditions, transcription, text annotation for intent, sentiment and entities, RLHF ranking of Russian model responses, moderation data covering slang and coded language and parallel corpora for custom MT or LLM fine-tuning. Guidelines are written with the client, gold tasks run before production and inter-annotator agreement is reported with every delivery. A free pilot batch is available.

FAQ
Russian translation FAQ
Which language pairs do you cover for Russian?
El Turco translates into Russian from English, German, French, Chinese, Turkish and Arabic. We also translate from Russian into English. English is the usual source for software and games, and every listed source language is translated directly into Russian without an English pivot. Other source languages are quoted case by case after a short review of the content.
Can one Russian translation serve several countries?
One Russian translation can usually serve several countries, because written Russian follows the same standard everywhere. Currency, legal references, addresses, payment methods and support details still differ by market. El Turco keeps a shared Russian base and adds a short locale layer for each country instead of commissioning separate full translations.
Are Russian and Ukrainian interchangeable for localization?
No. Russian and Ukrainian are separate languages with different alphabets, grammar and vocabulary. Ukrainian users expect content in Ukrainian. El Turco translates both as independent targets with separate native linguists, glossaries and style guides. Translating Ukrainian from the English source, rather than from the Russian version, avoids carrying Russian structures into the Ukrainian text.
How do you handle Russian plurals and cases in software strings?
Russian software strings are handled by linguists who check how each variable is used before translating. Plural strings get the ICU categories one, few, many and other, because Russian numbers select different noun forms. Strings where a placeholder would need a case ending are rewritten so the variable stays in its base form, or the developer is asked for separate variants.
Is machine translation reliable for Russian?
Machine translation for Russian is usable for many technical and support texts but still makes case, gender and aspect errors that native readers notice. El Turco runs Russian MTPE under ISO 18587: we test the engine on a sample of your content, agree the post-editing level and post-edit with native linguists. Marketing, legal and UI text should be translated by humans.
Who translates Russian at El Turco?
Russian translation at El Turco is done by native Russian linguists selected by subject domain and managed by in-house project managers in Istanbul. A second native linguist reviews every job under ISO 17100. Linguists sign NDAs and work inside the client CAT tool or ours, and our information security management follows ISO/IEC 27001.
How do I start a Russian localization project?
A Russian localization project starts with the contact form: share the content type, volume, source language, target countries and timeline. Enterprises can request a free pilot, and LSPs receive a free test translation of up to 300 words. We then agree the glossary, style guide, formality level and file formats. Pricing is per-word, hourly or project-based, quoted after scoping.
